Your Questions About Car Insurance

January 14, 2013 by Leave a Comment

Chris asks…

Do I need a California driver’s license to register a new car. I have a Guam drivers license and insurance.

The car I bought is form a private dealer. I dont think that would affect much, but I just need to get the car registered along with getting new plates. I’m assuming that I don’t need a california drivers license to do this. Does anyone know? Guam is a U.S. territory after all.

The Expert answers:

If you live in California now then you need a California license to drive and own a vehicle. If you plan to take the vehicle back to Guam then drive it back within the 30 days and register it there.

Sandra asks…

I am a new driver and need help finding good car insurance?

I want to know your experiences with the major car insurers in California like how helpful were they in very tight jams and other predicaments you were ever in. Also if you did research on the different insurers, which seemed the best at the most affordable rate. I just want to make sure i make the best decision on this and i have done research myself, i just wish to have your outtake on my matter. Thanks

The Expert answers:

They are all the same and if you aren’t careful they will charge you twice what the next one will so search for the best price!

Betty asks…

Would a California car insurance card suffice as proof of residency for a driver’s license?

I have just moved to California. I live with my parents, am over eighteen, and have yet to find a job. If I switch my insurance over from Wisconsin to California (which I need to do anyway), would my new California car insurance card qualify as proof of residency? My plates expire at the end of the month, and, in case I can’t find a job by then, I’d like to get this license plate fiasco out of the way sooner rather than later.

The Expert answers:

The question is worded a little odd. You do not need a proof of residency in California to get a California Driver’s license. You need date of birth and legal presence in the USA proof. (Proof allowed to be in America having nothing to do with car insurance or registration).

You need a social security card
The basics are on the reference above.
You need to fill in a DL 44 form that is not shown at their web site. It requires an original signature.
They will mail it to the address you provide and not allow forwarding.

Laura asks…

What are california’s car insurance laws?

Im a new driver and was wondering if its a type of insurance i need. I only have Liability on my car nothing else am i ok if i get pulled over and asked for proof of insurance??

The Expert answers:

As an insured California resident I can answer this. Basic liability coverage is all the state requires.

Liability Car Insurance basically covers what you’re liable for. If you caused damage to another vehicle, person or property then your insurance company will pay for what you were held liable for up to your policy limits. The minimum limits required in California for auto insurance are 15/30/5. 15/30/5 is short for $15,000 per person for bodily injuries, $30,000 max per occurrence for bodily injuries, and $5,000 max for property damage.

So yes, you’re completely legal if pulled over and asked for insurance.

James asks…

California Car Insurance?

Hi, I am a 17 year old girl who just bought my first car. It is a 1992 Buick Regal in perfect condition with a clean title. In addition, I just graduated High School with a 4.0. With these elements, what would probably be the best insurance company to go with to get a low rate?
Or, what insurance company would you reccomend working with for a new teenage girl driver?
Thanks!

The Expert answers:

I found a really good car insurance quote from http://gsx1.com/InsuranceComparison.htm I saved 570 dollars!

John asks…

I bought my car in California. Do I have to register it in my new state or can I renew it in california still?

It costs around $800 to register my car in a new state. If i renew it in california, it only costs $147. Can I do this? My drivers liscence and insurance is in louisiana.

The Expert answers:

I’m not sure if California requires you to be a resident there in order to keep your vehicle registered there. Some states do. I looked at their web site but couldn’t see anything about it. Most people try to get AWAY from paying California registration fees because they are some of the highest in the country. I would call CA and ask if residency is a requirement for registration. 1-800-777-0133

In terms of the other state, if law enforcement in the state you actually live in finds out that you are keeping your car registered in another state they may cite you and report you to the local DMV. If they do (depending on the state) the other DMV may charge you back registration fees because those fees are a large part of the states revenue, and in some states it’s considered a form of tax evasion.

I would check with both states. Check with CA to see if they allow non-residents to register vehicles, and check with the state you live in to what penalties you could incur for failure to register your vehicle in your state of residence.

Thomas asks…

In california does a 16 year old new driver have to be personally insured to drive their parents car?

My sister lives in san jose and she was told by her parents that to drive one of their cars she has to pay for her own insurance. Is this true???

The Expert answers:

She just needs to be added to her parents insurance policy & then she will be considered an additional driver on the policy.

And yes her parents premiums will increase.

No one under the age of 18, unless they have been declared an emancipated minor, can enter into any form of legal & binding contract in any state within the United States.

Since she is only 16, how is she going to even be able to get insurance for herself?

Nancy asks…

How Soon Have To Add Insurance After Gotten New Driver’s License?

Do we have to immediately add insurance coverage to a teenager son who just gets a new driver‘s license, even though he currently has no car to drive? We live in California.

The Expert answers:

When you have an additional driver in your household, you must notify the insurance company. This driver can be added to your policy, or can be excluded. If you are not going to allow your son to drive the family vehicles at all, you can exclude him from coverage. If he will be allowed to drive, even on a limited basis, he must be added to the coverage.

George asks…

Can I buy a brand new car with only a driver’s permit?
